The starting point of “Clearing” (2022) was a consideration about contrasting ideas of what constitutes a garden as recreational space and a place of beauty. Lantz’scher Park in its design is fashioned after English landscape gardens, which require a high level of care and intervention to maintain its aesthetic. For the cyanotype fabrics shown, ruderal plants, typically considered weeds, were used - plants that would grow apart from such landscaped areas, on agricultural and vacant lands left overworked as a result of human intervention. I created a paravent and a series of steel-frame chairs out of the fabrics, which provide a place of rest within the large lawn of Lantzscher Park.
